Although I never knew Uncle John, I do know I have made sure to visit his grave each time I visit the cemetery.  I've never forgotten him for I've known his son.  If Uncle John is anything like his son, I know he was a very good, loving person and a great husband to his wife.  For over 80 years, my grandmother kept a picture of Uncle John on her wall, so he was who I saw each time I walked into her house.

My hero and best friend was my brother, he lived his life each day as a new day.  He really would never talk about the war or what he went through.   He lived till he was 50 and but gave us wonderful memories to hang on too.  He lived with me at the end and never made me feel sad, he always had something funny to say.  I miss our long phone calls and having fun together.  In my heart he will always me alive.  He had many friends which where always there for him and he was ALWAYS there for them.  He helped out in Brooklyn VA and continued to do volunteer work in Florida.

John Henry has been terribly missed.  One of many who fought for their country and  abandoned by that same country. Died in the jungles of Viet Nam while serving in the USMC. I have missed you so  my love.  God Bless you and all the men and women who have so valiantly served.

ALL VETERANS
United States of America
To all the men and women who have so valiantly served this country.  All of us should be so grateful for your sacrifices. I believe this country has created a sad epitaph for our veterans.  Many of those that are still missing or help captive have been deserted by the very country they chose to serve. But, I can tell that many of us are still working very hard to make this government accountable. I am so proud to be a veteran and have had the honor to serve with many fine military people. Bless you all for being there for us today.  And, bless all that have gone before you. My heart felt sympathies for all those who have lost a loved one - they have gone, but they have made you proud.  Let us never forget our pride in our service men and women - let us never fail to support them.

My daddy served our country proudly.  He fought bravely and courageously.  Each time I heard my daddy pray, he always prayed for our country.  I miss my daddy, he died 17 years ago; but he loved his country and was proud of America.  I am thankful to our precious Lord and Savior for such Christian men and women who served this country proudly.  Thank you for honoring this great nation....we are so blessed.  Most of all, I thank our precious Jesus Christ who nailed our sins to that old rugged cross so that each of us may have the gift of eternal life.  Many of our men and women have given their lives for this great nation; God gave His only Son, Jesus, so that we may live in this great nation and be blessed with eternal life.  Thank you, Jesus.  Thank you, daddy, for being a soldier and a Christian daddy.  I love and miss you dearly.

My dad, a true hero to our family and our country. He was only 17 when he enlisted in the Army in WWII and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge, other heavy action in France, Italy and Germany, and helped in liberating a concentration camp. Thank God he came home safely to marry Mom and begin the wonderful family we have today. Six children and 13 grandchildren later, he's our own hero! Thank you, God, for lending him to us!  Peg

Angela Barca
South Hempstead, NY, USA

A true hero is a person who as done something in your life, which changed it forever. A hero could be a family member, teacher, or a friend. My hero happens to be my health teacher, Angela Barca. She is what I call a hero. She is a perfect example of a hero because she has taught me things, which I will take with me for the rest of my life. Mrs. Barca has shared many of her personal experiences in life and how she learned from them. When she was a child her father was an alcoholic and still is today. She told me that he would go to work every day but he would always come home drunk. Mrs. Barca had enough courage to get through that hard time in her life and now teaches children the dangers of drinking. Another hardship that she went through was her first marriage. In that marriage they had three children. Her ex husband did not treat her well and she always told us not to rush into anything and always make sure that the person you want to spend the rest of you life with treats you like you should be treated. When she teaches she always adds things about her life to try to help us understand what we are learning. All of the activities that we did in her class were fun and interesting. Mrs. Barca was always there to lend a helping hand whether it dealt with schoolwork or your personal life. I know that each night she goes home after school and spends a lot of time grading papers. A lot of the things she had us write were like journals. She always said since we spend a lot of time writing the papers she will take her time in grading them. I know that she writes a lot of comments and things to help you through what you are writing about. Something that I will remember that Mrs. Barca told me is that good things come in small packages. She told me this because I am not the tallest person you will see. In school I am not picked on but it is a joke about my height. I am not a midget. I am 4ft 9 in. When I was taking a picture with Mrs. Barca she had to take off her shoes to be close to my height. It didnít make me upset at all but then my friend started making fun of me as a joke. When I went to Mrs. Barcaís room later that day, she told me not to worry about my height and that good things come in small packages. There is one thing that I will take with me forever that she told me. That is that things always happen for a reason. Last year in my school there was a hit list put up in the boysí bathroom. There were four teachers put on it including Mrs. Barca and my Social Studies teacher. When Mrs. Barca told me things happen for a reason I believed her because now my Social Studies teacher and Mrs. Barca got married. They met because they were put on the hit list and now are married. I know that if there is anything wrong I will always be able to go to her even if she is not in the same school as me because she gave me her email address and screen name for America Online. This girl that I know told me that she wanted to kill herself. I had no idea what to do so I emailed Mrs. Barca. She emailed me back and told me it didnít seem that serious but if it continues to tell her to tell her parents or to tell my parents. That helped a lot. She is always there to give me advice. I want to be a health teacher or counselor because I want to give students the experience that she gave me. I feel so lucky that I was able to get the chance to have Mrs. Barca as a teacher and I wish more students could have a teacher as life changing as her. At the end of the year and the end of my journey at Mattlin Middle School in Plainview, I was able to take out so much from just one teacher. Now I am a freshman in JFK High School and I donít know what to expect. One thing that I know is that even though Mrs. Barca isnít going to be there I have all of the things that she taught me and I can apply them to what happens in high school.
