You served selflessly from June 23, 1949 until July 1973, enduring the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and continued to serve your country in civil service for another 20 years as an instructor and finally a Master M1 tank troubleshooter. You've given me a wealth of history with stories that have become priceless, and have given me the opportunity to live abroad and travel extensively throughout Europe. I will never forget when you visited me in May 1988 in Germany and we traveled to the Luxembourg American Cemetery on Memorial Day in hopes of finding your brother's final resting place. The moment you found Uncle William's name engraved upon the wall honoring the soldiers lost in battle during WWII is a moment forever etched into my memory. Thank you for all you've given to all of us.....you are my hero Dad and I love you lots. Your daughter, Kelli

Robert Ray Clayton

The best step-father anyone could ask for. He served in Korea and in Vietnam three times. He loved his country then and loves America today. He believes in respecting the American flag the old-fashioned way. He believes that every American veteran should be saluted for serving our country and defending our rights and the rights of others. He does not believe that this country should take any privileges from our veterans if they serve two or twenty years. He served his country for 20 years and my mother and I are very proud of him. Bob, we love you!

My father has passed on 3 years ago now. He was a great man. He never tried to show off his achievments. He was in World War II and served for our Country. After serving our Country he went on to work in the Space sytem and participated and helped by adding his time to The Space Program. He worked with Gemini I and Gemini II and Mercury and Apollo missions that resulted in landing men on the moon. I am very proud of my father. May his achievements never be forgotten. Mitch W. Our four brothers served in the WW11 (3 in the Navy & 1 in the Army). Though we were small, we recall Pearl Harbor Day because we had a brother there and our family spent that Sunday praying. Our window banner had 4 stars-the most in the neighborhood(we kids were very proud of that). This was the war that literally saved the USA, as we were actually threatened on our home ground. Hats off to all you guys! The three sisters

From the time we met in 1986, you were a hero to me. I often thought of your time in Viet Nam as a Marine and I still do.

But, you remain a hero to me in a different way - on the battlefield of abused women and children, you fought in the trenches for six long years. Despite all else, you will remain a hero to me eternally.

Proud to have 'served' with you,

No matter how famous he was with the American people in the entertainment business, he didn't let his popularity keep him from serving his country. No matter how famous a person may be, he should take pride as being a true American. He was a true American to serve his country as he did.

Buffalo, NY

Joe served in the Marines in VietNam from 66-67. He died of cancer in 1997, possibly Agent Orange-related. He was enthusiastic about the Corps for the rest of his life. I loved him dearly; he was my husband. Joe, thank you for all you did for our country. Now you are finally WELCOME HOME.

Wilbur N. Jones, USN
Santa Cruz, CA

My father served in the Navy in WWII from 1942-45. He served on a mail boat in the Pacific and never saw combat. He was more than willing to do that, but at his age was considered too old for the most demanding assignments. He was worthy of honor for his service, of course, but also because of his attributes as a man; he was kind, honest, funny and very loving. Thsnk you, Daddy, for your service and your life.

Norris S. Pendergrass Sr.
Roseburg, Oregon USA

My father fought in WWII as a Tanker, Armored Division under General George Patton. He was injured quite intensively, being 100% disabled veteran yet he never let that keep him from raising four children and working every day of his life until his death in 1985. He spent over 5 years in the hospital because of his wounds and reconstruction. But it was his bravery and stamina that prompted me to spend three tours in Vietnam from 1966 thru 1968 in the 1st Marine Division. Thank you father for your devotion and your character building. Your Son, Norris S. Pendergrass Jr.

JIM R.ZACHARY

Uncle Jim landed on Omaha Beach with the 29th Division on D-Day. He was wounded and captured 6 days later and spent the rest of the war as a POW. He was beaten, starved , and forced to work outside during that bitter winter of 1944. I never understood why he wouldn't talk about the war until I came home from Vietnam. I only hope I was half as brave there as you were on that beach and in that POW camp. I'm glad I told you that you were my hero before you passed away. You really were, and still are my hero. I love you , Uncle Jim.

Ted entered the U.S. Army in early 1942 during WW2 and served as a "Medic" during his four years of service. Ted passed away in 1994.

Sgt. Ted Goldner

Sgt. Ted Goldner
New York, NY

Ted reported for duty in the Army in early 1942. He was trained as a "Medic" and sent to duty helping the wounded and dying. In some way it was sad, but in others he was rewarded by his efforts. It takes a certain type of hero that brings hope and comfort to the stricken so they might survive. My brother Ted was that type of soldier. Good job Ted. You earned the approval of many. Ted passed away in 1994. Alan Goldner

Sergeant Billy Joe Renfrow
Winnsboro, La.

THIS WAS WRITTEN BY BILLY JOE KILLED IN ACTION, DAU TIENG, VIETNAM OCTOBER 2, 1969

WAR IS..........

IT IS A MANY A CUT AND PAINFUL BRUISE WHICH NO OINTMENT EVER SOOTHES.

IT IS MONSOON RAINS WHICH NEVER QUIT, AND THOUGHTS OF HOME THAT JUST DON'T FIT.

IT IS CLIMBING CRUEL MOUNTAINS ONLY TO FIND TWO IN FRONT FOR EACH ONE BEHIND.

IT'S THOUSANDS OF INSECTS OF VARIOUS KINDS WHICH DEPRIVE HIM OF HIS PEACE OF MIND.

IT'S BOOBY TRAPS AND PUNGI STAKES, LEACHES AND MUD AND DEADLY SNAKES.

IT'S COLD C RATIONS EATEN IN HASTE, BUT REST ASSURED, NONE GOES TO WASTE.

IT IS THE CONSTANT STRAIN OF STAYING ALERT, OF TRYING TO SLEEP IN MUD AND DIRT.

IT'S UNWASHED FATIGUES, BUT DOES NOT SPARE, HIS DRINKING WATER IT'S OFTEN RARE.

IT'S LONG LONELY NIGHTS FILLED WITH FEAR, WITH EVERY SENSE ASKING "IS CHARLIE NEAR?"

IT'S TREACHEROUS TUNNELS AND CLOSE QUARTER FIGHTING AND ENDLESS PATROLS TO KEEP CHARLIE FROM HIDING.

IT'S A VIOLENT AMBUSH, QUICK AND CRUEL, TO PLAY OUT THERE IS THE CREED OF A FOOL.

IT'S CATHOLIC MASS NEAR A BEAUTIFUL CREEK, IT MATTERS NOT WHAT DAY OF THE WEEK.

OTHERS PRAY IN A NEARBY PLACE, RIFLES IN HAND, GET FILLED WITH GRACE.

IT'S MISSING HIS LOVED ONES WHO WAIT IN FEAR, AND YEARN FOR THE DAY HE'LL FINISH HIS YEAR.

IT'S BRAVE MEN BECOMING STRANGELY QUIET WHEN HEARING OF A STATESIDE ANTI-WAR RIOT.

IT'S THE SUDDEN STILLNESS THE JUNGLE ASSUMES WHEN A BURST OF SIX SIGNALS HIS DOOM.

IT'S THE TERRIBLE AGONY WITH WHICH HE IS FILLED WHEN HEARING A COMRADE HAS JUST BEEN KILLED.

IT'S THIS PRAYER HE RECITES TO HIMSELF EACH NIGHT.

DEAR GOD, I DIDN'T ASK TO FIGHT AND I DON'T KNOW IF WHAT WE ARE DOING IS RIGHT. I PRAY THAT TONIGHT WON'T TAKE ME IN DEATH, I PRAY THAT AT DAWN I'LL STILL HAVE MY BREATH. AND WHEN, IF EVER, THIS WAR IS DONE, PLEASE DON'T LET IT BE ME WHO SHALL SAY, "DEAR GOD, WHAT HAVE I DONE?"

REST IN PEACE BILLY JOE, YOU WAS VERY SPECIAL. I'LL SEE YOU AGAIN SOME DAY. A VERY GOOD FRIEND, JEANIE POSEY MCCARTHY

Now serving in Kosovo! Psalm 91 He that dwelleth in the secretplace of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be they shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee..... He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone..... He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
